About our service in Bristol
If you’ve lost someone in Bristol or anywhere across the West, we can help you arrange a basic cremation — also called a direct or unattended cremation. The process happens locally: an independent funeral director near you brings your loved one into care at their own funeral home, and the cremation takes place at one of the established Bristol-area crematoria.
Bristol is well served. Canford Crematorium opened in 1937 and serves north and central Bristol. South Bristol Crematorium covers the south of the city. Westerleigh Crematorium serves South Gloucestershire and the eastern fringe, with Mangotsfield serving the suburban east. Weston-super-Mare Crematorium covers the North Somerset coastal stretch.
The price is £1,499 — a single all-inclusive figure covering everything that needs to happen. The team is available 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
Pricing in Bristol
The £1,499 price covers collection from a hospital or coroner’s mortuary. Collection from a home, care home or hospice in Bristol or anywhere in Bristol & the West requires a £250 Priority Care collection fee — making the total £1,749. Always explained on the phone before anything happens, never added afterwards.

Registering a death in Bristol
All deaths that occurred within the City of Bristol must be registered at Bristol Register Office at Quakers Friars in Broadmead. The office is appointment-only; bookings open once the Medical Examiner or coroner has released the paperwork. A death must normally be registered within 5 days unless the coroner is involved. Bristol participates in Tell Us Once. South Gloucestershire, North Somerset and Bath & North East Somerset each have their own register offices for deaths in those districts.
If your loved one died in hospital, the hospital’s bereavement office handles the paperwork that needs to go to the Medical Examiner before the death can be registered. Your funeral director will normally liaise with them on your behalf.

When the coroner is involved
If the death is unexpected, sudden or the cause is not yet clear, the Medical Examiner may refer the case to HM Senior Coroner for Avon, which covers Bristol, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. This happens for around 40% of deaths in England and Wales.
The Bristol coroner reviews the cause of death and either releases the death for registration or arranges a post-mortem. Where a post-mortem is needed, your loved one is held at the Flax Bourton public mortuary.
If an inquest is opened, the coroner sends the paperwork to the registrar after it concludes. The cremation can proceed once the coroner releases your loved one to the funeral director.
